What a Category 5 Hurricane Can do to a House

Hurricane Irma, a monster...
Irma, a Category 5 hurricane, as it approached Puerto Rico on Wednesday.

The U.S. has faced monster hurricanes from the Caribbean twice in less than a month.

In late August, Hurricane Harvey roared ashore with 130 mph winds and devastated large areas of Texas and Louisiana.  It took 30 lives, flooded 11,000 square miles and left wind and flood damage estimated at $23 billion.

On Wednesday, Hurricane Irma, a monster packing winds of 185 mph and more, battered Caribbean islands.  It is forecast to continue on a course northward and to hit Florida.
