Trump's Wall, Mexico and Mythical Terrorist Immigrants

Fact checking...
Honoring the Mexican flag.

Editor's note: The New York Times and The Associated Press recently fact checked two of the issues involved in the ongoing Trump federal government shutdown: Trump's statements on numerous occasions that Mexico would pay for his wall and his claims that the wall is necessary because of a tide of terrorist immigrants from Mexico. Here's what they found:

Mexico Paying for Trump's wall

What Mr. Trump said, according to Linda Qiu reporting on nytimes.com, was:  "When -- during the campaign, I would say, 'Mexico is going to pay for it.'

"Obviously, I never said this and never meant they're going to write out a check. I said, They're going to pay for it.

"They are. They are paying for it with the incredible deal we made, called the United States, Mexico and Canada USMCA deal," Qiu wrote.

Mythical Terrorists Pouring Across the Border from Mexico

President Donald Trump and his officials persist in promoting the discredited notion that terror suspects are pouring into the US from Mexico by the thousands, ap.com reported earlier this month.

Despite their portrayal of Mexico as a teeming portal for terrorists, the State Department issued a report in September finding "no credible evidence indicating that international terrorist groups have established bases in Mexico, worked with Mexican drug cartels or sent operatives via Mexico into the United States," the news service added.
