Facebook Finds Ongoing Evidence of Election Interference

New cyber attacks discovered...

Facebook has identified an ongoing effort to influence the US midterm elections, using inauthentic accounts and pages on the social network, Sara Frier reports on bloombergcom.

"We're still in the very early stages of our investigation and don't have all the facts -- including who may be behind this," Facebook said Tuesday in a blog post, Frier wrote.

"It's clear that whoever set up these accounts went to much greater lengths to obscure their true identities than the Russian-base Internet Research Agency has in the past," Facebook said, according to Frier.

Examples of inauthentic pages, according to Facebook:

Dealing With a New Password Hacker Scam

New email attack...

In a new scam, hackers claim they stole your password and blackmail you.

There's a new scam going around that would terrify most people if it ever landed in their inbox, Kif Leswing reports on businessinsider.com.

The emails are slightly different depending on who's being attacked, but they all have a few similar features, Leswing wrote.

The subject line includes a password that you probably have used at some point. The sender says they have used that password to hack your computer, install malware, and record video of you through your webcam, he noted.

They say they will reveal your adult-website habits and send video of you to your contacts unless you send them bitcoin, usually $1,200 or $1,600 worth, he added.

How English is Taking Over the Planet

English is everywhere...

English has grown to a vast size and astonishing influence.

Behemoth, bully, loudmouth, thief: English is everywhere, and everywhere, English dominates, Jacob Mikanowski reports on theguardian.com.

From inauspicious beginnings on the edge of a minor European archipelago, it has grown to vast size and astonishing influence, Mikanowski wrote.

Almost 400 million people speak it as their first language; a billion more know it as a secondary tongue, he added.

It is the official language in at least 59 countries, the unofficial lingua franca in dozens more, he noted.

Maybe US Health Care Isn't so Expensive After all

Puncturing myths...

A brain surgery team in New York.

Maybe the United States health care system isn't that bizarre after all.

Compared with peer nations, the United States sends people to the hospital less often, it has a smaller share of specialist physicians, and it gives people about the same number of hospitalizations and doctors' visits, according to a new study, Margot Sanger-Katz reports on nytimes.com.

The quality of health care looks pretty good, it finds, while its spending on social services outside of health care, like housing and education, looked fairly typical, Sanger-Katz wrote.

Why People Buy Into Falsehoods

Programmed to believe...

C'mon, I'll hold it for you.

The saying goes that there's one born every minute, but according to census data it's really more like every eight seconds, Eoin O'Carroll reports on csmonitor.com.

In other words, we're all suckers, he wrote.

Psychologists say it takes more of our mental resources to identify a statement as false than to label it as true, a phenomenon that they chalk up to our evolutionary history as socially cooperative animals, ones who for the most part speak honestly with each other, O'Carroll added.

Ways to Save Money on Printer Ink

Tips on spending less...
Printer ink can be more expensive than champagne.

Few things irritate consumers more than the high price of printer ink, Tercius Bufete reports on consumerreports.org.

If you want to see black clouds roll in, just tell someone it's time to drive to the store, open the wallet, and purchase a new round of color cartridges, Bufete wrote.

In a 2015 Consumer Reports survey, almost half of printer owners said they were paying too much for printer cartridges.  And among the 36,000 subscribers surveyed, more than a quarter said they found themselves buying new cartridges too often, Bufete added.

Best and Worst Charities for Your Donations

Tips to keep in mind about giving...

Know about the group you plan to help before donating.

When you're planning to make a charitable donation, make sure you know more about the group than just the name it goes by, Anthony Giorgianni writes on consumerreports.org.

Choosing charities by name alone is a mistake some donors make, and their money sometimes ends up going to less-than-worthy groups, Giorgianni noted.

Those organizations perhaps spend too much on administrative costs or are outright scammers, says Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the charity watchdong BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Giogianni added.

Cyber Wars: A Growing, Worldwide Problem

Cyber attacks on the increase...

More and more countries are capable of cyber attacks.

Editor's note: Cyber attacks are being reported around the world. The American intelligence community has confirmed Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and FBI Director Christopher Wray and National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said last week that Russian interference in the US continues.

A new bloomberg.com report focuses on countries using digitally enabled suppression.

Foreign Affairs reports on Dan Coats' warnings about new Russian attacks in the US and how Russian hackers have hit Germany and Ukraine,

A decade ago, Estonia became one of the first countries to suffered Russian computer attacks and has since become a cyber hotshot.

For more on three fascinating reports:

A global guide to state-sponsored trolling

Only a few years after Twitter and Facebook were celebrated as the spark of democratic movements worldwide, states and their proxies are hatching new forms of digitally enabled suppression that were unthinkable before the age of social media giants, according to evidence collected from computer sleuths, researchers and documents across more than a dozen countries, bloomberg.com reports.

Combining virtual hate mobs, surveillance, misinformation, anonymous threats, and the invasion of victims' privacy, states and political parties around the globe have created an increasingly online playbook that is difficult for the platforms to detect or counter, bloomberg added.

For more of a timely report: https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2018-government-
sponsored-cyber-militia-cookbook/

The next cyber battlefield

The digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack, National Intelligence Director Dan Coats warned starkly last week, Rob Knake reports on foreignaffairs.com.

Most commentators took his declaration that "warning lights are blinking red" as a reference to state-sponsored Russian hackers interfering in the upcoming midterm elections, as they did in the 2016 presidential election, Knake wrote.

But to focus on interference may be to fight the last war, fixating on past attacks while missing the most acute vulnerabilities now, Knake noted.

For more of a timely, new report: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/north-america/2018-07-19/next-cyber-battleground?cid=soc-tw&pgtype=hpg

How cyber attacks transformed Estonia

In April 2007 a dispute over a statue in Estonia sparked one of the world's first cyber attacks of one country on another.  Estonia was hit by Russian digital interference for weeks, Darmien McGuinness reported on bbc.com.

The attacks showed how easily a hostile state can exploit potential tensions within another society, McGuinness wrote.

But they also helped make Estonia a cyber security hotshot today, he noted.

As Russia Imbroglio Deepens, Trump to Invite Putin to US

Rift widens between Trump and his own administration...

James Comey, James Clapper and John Brennan at a Senate hearing on Russian election interference in January 2017.

The Trump-Russia imbroglio deepened today.

In a stunning new development, the White House announced that Trump will invite Putin to Washington this fall.

The announcement came late in the afternoon as Andrea Mitchell was interviewing Dan Coats, director of national intelligence.

In the interview carried by MSNBC and CNN, Coats told Mitchell he didn't know what was said during the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki.

Coats also appeared surprised when Mitchell told him about the White House announcement to invite Putin to Washington.

Later in the day on CNN, Jack Tapper asked a simple question about the Trump-Putin meeting and its aftermath: What the hell is going on?

How IBM Cloud is Superior to Amazon AWS

"If you build it..."

Longtime, loyal customers are staying with IBM for cloud computing.

In a new analysis, Seeking Alpha discusses how the IBM Cloud is superior to Amazon AWS.

Among the highlights of the report:

-- IBM is an Enterprise Cloud, Blockchain and AI play, and

-- Amazon AWS is a juggernaught but does not have the deep base of longtime loyal customers that IBM does.

It also notes:

-- Cloud now accounts for 21 percent of IBM's revenue (up from 10 percent just four years ago), and

-- 10 largest banks, nine of the top 10 retailers, and eight of the top airlines are already turning to IBM for cloud solutions.

Time to Retire Real Estate For Sale Signs?

Not so fast...

For Sale signs along a road in Darien, according to nytimes.com.

A planned ban on For Sale signs in New Canaan, Conn., hadn't even begun before it was over, Lisa Prevost reports on nytimes.com.

The New Canaan Board of Realtors had publicly announced the six-month trial ban in early June, citing the dramatic shift toward online house hunting and a desire among its members to improve the look of the pricey town, Prevost wrote.

For Sale signs have multiplied noticeably in New Canaan this year as the community has struggled to attract enough buyers to whittle down its substantial supply, she added.

Buying a Home Sight Unseen

House hunting with FaceTime...

Graham Candish was living in Geneva, Switzerland, while searching for a new home for his family in New York.

Zack Fountas bought a new one-bedroom apartment in White Plains, NY, from his home in Chicago, without ever having set foot inside the building, Candace Jackson reports on nytimes.com.

During an open house last summer, his sister-in-law and Joe Muller, an agent with Julia B. Fee Sotheby's International Realty, gave Mr. Fountas a tour using FactTime, Jackson wrote.

Mr. Muller showed him around with his iPhone and then emailed a link with the listing photos and comparable sales nearby, Jackson added.

Mr. Fountas, who had not seen any other places in person, bid $142,000, and his offer was accepted, according to Jackson.
