Oh, The Nonsense You'll Hear

Block that jargon...

Hit the ground running

Oh, the places you'll go, Dr. Seuss said.

Oh, the nonsense you'll hear, he might have added.

Some of that nonsense first surfaced in the workplace as euphemisms to help people deal with touchy subjects that were difficult to talk about.

Before long, they morphed into corporate buzzwords that expanded and took over our vocabulary until our everyday conversations started sounding like they’re taking place on another planet, Dr. Travis Bradberry writes on linkedin.com.

We hear them everywhere, not just in business but in outside meetings, on TV and radio and they even show up in newspaper and magazine articles, advertising and Internet items.

For more of Bradberry's report and examples of terms to avoid:

 For some other examples:

-- Awesome

-- Purpose built
-- It is what it is
-- The way forward
-- Team player
-- Reach out
-- Taking it to the next level
-- Build out
-- Disconnect
-- On the same page
-- Price point
-- Up your game
-- Skill set
-- Game changer
-- Going forward
-- Let me piggyback on that
-- Very unique
-- Closure

And that old favorite...starting every sentence with...so.

Or ending just about every sentence with...ok?

Many people find buzzwords and jargon confusing and silly.  For others they are frustrating and annoying:   http://www.cbsnews.com/news/10-things-you-should-never-say-at-the-office/

Just for fun, here are some buzzwords with illustrations you might enjoy: http://www.boston.com/bostonworks/galleries/work_speak?pg=15

Of course, these examples probably only scratch the surface.

What are some of your favorites for this not-so honor roll?

With thanks to Colleen Braithwaite for letting me know about this item.
